BAKU. April 6, 2012: State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) made its second attempt to forcibly evict the local residents of Sulutepe and demolish the houses in this suburban Baku area. The first attempt was made three days ago when unidentified people acting on behalf of SOCAR attacked the people and tried to beat them up. The confrontation stopped after the SOCAR abandoned its efforts to evict the people. Today, SOCAR resumed its demolition project. According to reports of Turan News Agency from the scene, the security service of the oil company using heavy machines demolished 10 houses in the area. SOCAR claims those houses were illegally built and no compensation should be paid to the local residents. The local residents of Sulutepe have the ownership documents on the land signed by the municipal authorities.
